Hapkido is a Korean martial art which is practiced all over the world. It was designed as a way to defend against and overcome a wide variety of attacks. Hapkido was influenced by the Japanese art of Aiki-jujitsu, and utilizes the principles of water, circular movements, and harmony. Additionally and more specifically, Chon-Tu Kwan Hapkido (Combat Hapkido) uses a variety of dynamic strikes, low kicks, joint-locks, throws, grappling, pressure point techniques, ground defence skills and defence against weapons. Hapkido is a defensive martial art intended to allow the practitioner to rapidly understand an attacker’s body language, take control of the situation and quickly end a confrontation by eliminating an attacker ability for further aggression.
This is accomplished through the development of a wide variety skills, allowing the practitioner to use an attacker’s size, strength, and movement to their own advantage. With training, students enhance their understanding of human body mechanics, allowing them to take precise control of an aggressor’s actions and respond accordingly.
Our program offers a safe, mutually learning environment where students will develop a well-rounded assortment of proven, effective techniques. Like other martial arts, students progress through ten colored belt levels, white to black belt. With each advancement, a student will build on their understanding and development of new techniques. As a students progresses, they can expect to improve their self confidence, balance, coordination and strength, allowing them to adapt and respond to any unexpected encounter, and not be caught off-guard if the need to defend themselves should arise.
As Hapkido is designed to very quickly take control of a physical confrontation and can effectively be used to subdue an aggressor, the art tends to be popular among private security and members of the law enforcement community.
