Self defence is more than a set of physical skills. Every day, women encounter situations involving verbal abuse, harassment, intimidation and violent confrontation. Most often, these encounters are not random, but are done by someone they know, such as an intimate partner, a work colleague or a classmate. Our approach to women’s self defence includes the mental and physical skills to detect, avoid, de-escalate and disengage from a very broad range of scenarios.
We teach skills that work from the understanding that the aggressor is likely to be bigger and stronger than you, their intended victim, and we focus on strategies that will let you create the space you need to get out and get safe.
Like any subject, the more you train, the more you learn. Our empowerment-based approach to women’s self defence has its foundation in Chon-Tu Kwan (Combat style) Hapkido, a modern martial art system built entirely around effective, realistic self defence.
Combat Hapkido is ideally suited for people of all levels of physical strength, size and athletic ability, because it involves strategies that use an attacker’s energy against them. Whether you choose to complete our 6-week women’s foundation program or join our ongoing co-ed Combat Hapkido classes, you’ll be building confidence and learning some powerful skills for your personal safety.About Our 6-Week Women’s Self Defence Foundations Course
Our 6-week women’s self defence foundations course will put some mental and physical self defence tools in your toolbox. Whether you’re looking for a stand-alone program to give you a solid base of personal safety skills or you’d like to establish a training foundation before moving to the regular Combat Hapkido co-ed classes, this 6-week course offers a fun, realistic and exciting introduction to self defence for women and teens of all fitness levels and experience.
You’ll test drive a dynamic mix of core skills like kicks, strikes, escapes from grabs and holds and defending yourself from the ground.

What is Smart Moves? It's a 6-week, empowerment-based self defence program designed to equip self-identified women with mental and physical skills to detect, avoid, de-escalate and defend against threats, harassment and potentially violent confrontation. Open to all fitness levels, this course will put a powerful set of personal safety tools in your life skills toolbox. Work with what you've got. Reconnect with your warrior spirit.
WHAT: Smart Moves 6-week women's personal safety and self defence course.
WHO: Mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, friends, co-workers - women & teens, ages 15+ (13-14 with instructor's permission).
